Note for:   George Beard,   1835 - 1911         Index

Individual Note:
George Beard was a Congregationalist Christian. It is said that Charles Sylvester Horne, (a famous Congregationalist preacher and father of radio comedian Kenneth Horne,) preached his first sermon in George Beard's farm kitchen in Outwoods.

George gave land at Outwoods for a Congregational chapel. A plaque to his memory was erected in the chapel by his son Charles. The plaque reads, "In memory of George Beard of Euxley through whose labours this mission room was erected in 1885 and who faithfully served this church and Sunday School for many years".

Note for:   William Beard,   1803 - 28 NOV 1878         Index

Individual Note:
William Beard is said to have had his arm amputated without anaesthetic. Clearly his left arm is missing in this photo taken around 1870 in Newport Shrophire. In the 1871 census, William is head of the household and has a lodger called Thomas Hayward,a threshing engine driver. I wonder if there is a connection.

Note for:   Robert Heath,   ABT 1775 - 1849         Index

Individual Note:
Thomas Kinnersley employed Robert Heath snr (1779-1849) and Robert Heath jnr (1816-1893) as managers of his Birchenwood coal and ironworks. Kidsgrove prospered as the demand for iron grew in the 1840's. The railway arrived in 1848 and a third tunnel wascarved out beneath Bathpool. In 1854 after the death of his father, Robert Heath jnr left the Birchenwood works to become the ironmaster at nearby Biddulph. When Thomas Kinnersley died in 1855 his second wife took over the works until her own death in 1877. Robert Heath bought the Birchenwood works in 1877 where he started his career. He dismantled the blast furnaces, and processed the coal into coke to supply his own ironworks. (from tree of Jeremy Wall).
